Opinion piece: Tell children that secrets can be a sign of abuse

Letter to the editor, published in The News Journal, April 22, 2007

There have been a number of local and national cases in which children were neglected, or were physically and sexually abused. For nearly 30 years, Prevent Child Abuse Delaware has been educating children about personal safety and abuse.

We discuss the difference between good and bad secrets. Good secrets make them feel happy or excited. A bad secret is when someone is hurt. Safe adults should be told.

If your child discloses any type of abuse, remain calm and do not blame the child. Abuse is never a child’s fault. Do not pressure a child to tell details. Call the Division of Family Services at (800) 292-9582 immediately to report abuse.
